Only One T-Mobile Plan Is Worth It

A breakdown of T-Mobile's plans, and the ones you should get instead

Hey,

T-Mobile offers 7 different cell phone plans to choose from.

Only 1 is worth it.

Here’s a breakdown of T-Mobile’s plans, which one is worth it, and the best alternatives for the other plans.

To kick things off, here’s the overview of T-Mobile’s plans:

  1. Essentials Saver - $50

  2. Essentials - $60

  3. Magenta - $70

  4. Magenta MAX - $85

  5. Go5G - $75

  6. Go5G Plus - $90 (worth it)

  7. Go5G Next - $100

What the heck are the differences between all of these plans?

Here’s the full breakdown:

T-Mobile Essentials Saver: Not Worth It

T-Mobile Essentials Saver is the cheapest unlimited plan T-Mobile offers.

It costs $50 per month for unlimited deprioritized data, 600Kbps hotspot data, 480p streaming, 128Kbps data roaming in Canada and Mexico, and no international data.

It’s not worth it.

For the same $50, you can get 50GB of priority from T-Mobile Prepaid.

Or you can get unlimited deprioritzed data from Metro by T-Mobile for as low as $25 for new customers ($40 per month for existing customers).

T-Mobile Essentials: Not Worth It

T-Mobile Essentials is the same plan as Essentials Saver, just more expensive for a single line. Instead of $50, it costs $60.

Why does T-Mobile do this?

I literally have no idea.

Anyway, do not get T-Mobile Essentials. You get a better plan with the $50 T-Mobile Prepaid Unlimited plan.

You could even upgrade to the T-Mobile Prepaid Unlimited Plus plan for the same $60 and give yourself priority data and 10GB of high-speed hotspot data.

Families will want to take a look at plans from Metro by T-Mobile for the best deals.

T-Mobile Magenta and Magenta MAX: Both Not Worth It

I’m going to keep this section short and sweet.

T-Mobile Magenta and Magenta MAX are no longer worth it for 1 key reason:

T-Mobile no longer gives these plans good device trade-in deals.

The Go5G Plus and Go5G Next plans get you up to $830 off an iPhone 15.

The Magenta and Magenta MAX plans?

They currently get you only $300 off.

When you combine the price of the iPhone + the plan, the new Go5G plans end up costing you less money:

The same holds true for a family with four lines:

Plus, the new Go5G plans have better features.

So why settle for Magenta or Magenta MAX when you can get better T-Mobile plans at a better net price?

T-Mobile Go5G: Not Worth It

I know I just said the new Go5G plans were awesome, but it turns out the entry-level Go5G plan is not.

It costs $75 for 100GB of priority data, 15GB of hotspot data, 1080p video streaming, 10GB of roaming in Canada and Mexico, and 5GB of international roaming in 11 European countries.

On the surface, not a bad plan.

But it falls prey to the same problem as the Magenta and Magenta MAX plans:

Go5G is not eligible for good device promotions.

Instead of $830 off a new iPhone 15, Go5G customers are only eligible for up to $300 off.

Add up the net cost of your phone + plan, and suddenly Go5G is more expensive than the better Go5G Plus plan:

Go5G Plus: 100% Worth It

T-Mobile Go5G Plus is the 1 T-Mobile plan that is actually worth it!

What makes it great?

  • It is packed with awesome features

  • It comes in at a great overall price (factoring in the cost of the phone + plan)

Go5G Plus is $90 per month for a single line.

It includes unlimited priority data, an insane 50GB of hotspot data, 4K video streaming, 15GB of roaming in Canada and Mexico, and 5GB of roaming in 210+ international destinations.

In addition, Go5G Plus comes with perks such as Netflix Basic, Apple TV+, free in-flight Wi-Fi, and one year of AAA.

The best feature of all?

Access to T-Mobile’s best device deals.

You’re now getting a full $830 off an iPhone 15, which effectively saves you $530 over the other plans ever two years.

Do the math out and you can see Go5G Plus is one of T-Mobile’s most affordable plans, regardless of how many lines you have:

Go5G Plus gives you T-Mobile’s best features AND the best overall price.

That’s why it’s the one plan that’s worth it.

But what about Go5G Next?

T-Mobile Go5G Next: Maybe Worth It?

Go5G Next is T-Mobile’s most expensive plan.

It costs a wallet-screaming $100 per month.

What do you get for the extra $10 per month over the Go5G Plus plan?

Just two changes:

  1. You get Hulu with ads as a perk

  2. You can upgrade your phone every 1 year instead of every 2 years

That’s it.

The rest of the features are the same:

So the real question becomes… is the extra $10 per month worth it for you to be able to upgrade your phone every 1 year instead of every 2 years?

For most people, the answer is “no.”

Stick with the Go5G Plus plan. Save yourself some money. Still get an awesome plan.

THAT SAID…

If you are the type of person who enjoys upgrading their phone every year (that would be me! 🙋🏻‍♂️), then I do think the Go5G Next plan is worth it for you.

Of course, you can always upgrade your phone every year by doing a trade-in deal through Apple or Samsung, and you can save yourself a huge amount of money by getting a prepaid plan instead.

For example, grabbing Metro by T-Mobile’s $25 unlimited plan and buying your phone unlocked from Apple or Samsung or Google will save you heaps of money over the $100 Go5G Next plan.

The best option for you depends on what your personal preferences are.

Key takeaway: if you’re going to get a plan from T-Mobile directly, 100% get the Go5G Plus plan.
